My name is Beatriz Sanchez, I am the mother of two girls. Aside from my family and friends, living a healthy lifestyle has easily been one of my top values. My experience at Urban Fitness has been not only challenging, but also very motivating and inspirational towards helping me achieve my long-awaited goal weight.

When I started my battle against my unhealthy lifestyle my approximate weight was at 215 pounds. Even if my tight schedule wouldn’t help me at all, I was determined to become more healthy, not only for myself, but also to set an example for my two daughters. My worst fear was to see them follow in my footsteps and see them go through the hardships that I’ve been battling with for so long. So my journey towards a healthier Betty started.

Drilling the fact that I might once be as fit as I wished to into the back of my head, I started exercising as much as my schedule would let me, and for the first time in my life, I started to eat much more healthier and using dietary supplements as well as finding alternatives to those sugary foods I craved for so much; getting me closer and closer to that once thought unattainable weight that I wished for. By the end of the struggle I was only a mere 10 pounds away from my ideal weight of 120 pounds, but one unfortunate day changed my pace for the worst that month.

In the year of 2006, I was involved in a car accident on the freeway due to safety reasons. Due to the frightful event, I was unable to continue my exercising for a total of six months. The recovery was just as difficult as the weight loss, the struggle through therapy and healing weighed on my determination and patience as a rock on a toothpick, but I wasn’t prepared to give up that easily. By the time I was fully recovered I had gained about 48 pounds, pushing me farther away from my ideal weight, but the thought of my family and my health only gave me the strength and courage I needed to take on the frightful challenge that fate had placed in my pathway.

Once again, I started my exercising. My husband gave me the motivation and support I needed to complete my dream. With diets, healthy eating, vitamins, plenty of exercising and money loss on exercise equipment I had reached 145 pounds. The only problem was, that I was stuck at that weight. Many experts call it a “weight-loss plateau” where the body adapts to the exercising routine; giving a slower metabolism. I maintained this weight until I started the Urban Fitness Challenge.

I had heard of the challenge before but had not joined, due to my timid character. My husband started to motivate me, and soon after he convinced me to take on this challenge. At first I was skeptical as to if the challenge would help me, I thought that because of the experiences with fitness, that I would easily fly through, but in reality I was wrong, the challenge was really what it is named, a challenge. It was very hard and it took a lot of dedication, nonetheless I am more than happy to have taken it. It provided me to not only get past my weight-loss plateau but it had also shown me what I was capable of, given the support of my friends, family, peers, and my trainer.

My trainer Touraan, also played a huge part in helping me reach my goal. He, along with my husband and children, gave me the support I needed to get me closer to my goal. Touraan gave me the tools I required to get to where I am today, such as new exercises, healthy alternatives to some types of food and new techniques. I am very lucky to have been exposed to Urban Fitness and its staff, because without them and my family, I wouldn’t have come closer to reaching the goal I had always dreamed for.

I have always been the person to claim that trainers can’t or won’t help me achieve my goals because I thought I knew everything and anything there was to know about working and out dieting. I finally swallowed my pride and told Luke I wanted big gains and at least another 20 pounds of muscle. Not only did he make sure I reached this goal, he has taught me so much about working out and dieting that I can take this information and use it for the rest of my life. I dedicated every single day to achieving my goals, taking meal breaks during work, spent money on protein powder and food, and even missing days of work just so I could get a workout in on Sunday.

Each week we would up my calorie intake and change my workouts to gain as much muscle as we possibly could, then adjust accordingly the next week. As long as I stuck to the workout and meal plan I saw 3, 4 and even 8 pound gains in muscle each week! It was a long dedicated two months but in the end I am the heaviest I have ever been and I’m in the best shape of my life. So for the person out there reading this who was just like me, yes, you can and you will see big gains as long as the time and effort is put in.

Two years ago I participated in two challenges. The first I lost, the second I won first place in my division, and was the grand prize runner up. Then, as I said, life happens! I got busy and found the easiest thing to drop was my participation at the gym. In retrospect, it wasn’t the right thing to do. Within 2 years I gained all but 20 lbs back.

I learned to eat for training and competition, but after that I went back to my old ways and habits, along with dropping the gym. You see the final result.

This time of my life, with the obituaries having people my age and younger, my brother being diagnosed with cancer and my sister in-law with type two diabetes; I decided to start a new healthier life style. The first of the year I started juicing and eating the kind of things I was suppose to. It was working! I started losing weight. After a month and a half I had lost 10 pounds. Then Shelly (Michelle Wright) and Delicia Light talked me into doing another challenge.

At first I said I was embarrassed to come back and have everyone see that I had gained almost everything back. They told me it would be like a winners reunion challenge, ’cause a Lot of people were in the same boat. So I decided it could only benefit my healthy new lifestyle.

To my surprise I was greeted with excitement that I would get back on track and try the challenge again. I love this Urban Fitness! And the people are friendly too. I had Luke for a trainer and learned things about weight loss that I had misconceptions about previously. I told him I didn’t want to loose any muscle mass this time, and I’m on a protein and vegetable diet. We went over it and tweaked it a little bit and came up with a good plan for me. IT WORKED!!! I’m so thankful for the routines and specialized treatment in my training sessions also. I learned so much and plan on being a regular around here now. A very good experience and would recommend it to anyone.

Since starting this program 8 short weeks ago, and my radical change, I have people all over asking me what I’m doing. It feels good to be able to direct people into a better lifestyle. They see me and realize it can be done. I’m no different than any of you. You can do it too.

In the end, if we have lost weight or just inches in this challenge, or maybe even just a healthier lifestyle of exercising, WE ALL HAVE WON!!!

Thank you for the opportunity to change my life again. I like this body and am going to keep it this time.

This is my second time doing the challenge. Let me tell you, it was a lot harder. However, more rewarding. This time, it wasn’t about a challenge. It was about me. Funny how your mind operates. How your thoughts can be so powerful. How, when I was in it to win it, it was easier. Now it’s about life change, better choices, healthy living and staying strong. This takes much more and I find myself arguing with me, now and again. Because I have learned so much through these challenges and with the motivation of my trainer, plus the great atmosphere of this gym, without a doubt, I will continue to take care of myself. When I feel like giving up, I look at the results and remember it will always be a “challenge,” but that I must go through the valleys in order to reach the mountain! I am strong and feel good about me. Thank you Luke and Urban!
